Developed by scientists at the National University of Singapore, the tool is what's known as a shadow-effect energy generator (SEG). The current prototype is made up of a flexible transparent plastic base along with four cells, each one of which consists of a thin gold film deposited onto a silicon wafer. These cells are cheaper to produce than comparable silicon solar cells.
Following the closure of the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme to new applicants in March 2019, the government recognised the need to pay small-scale renewable energy generators for the electricity they export to the grid. Consequently, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) introduced the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
Despite the growing range of electric vehicles, combustion engine vehicles are projected to have a market share among new cars of 85 percent even in 2025. In these vehicles, the generator supplies a growing number of electronic consumers, from comfort features such as air conditioning and navigation to safety features such as ABS and automated driving functions. The more efficiently the necessary power is generated, the lower the overall fuel consumption of the vehicle.
Active rectifying in combination with specially developed semi-conductor technology reduces conduction losses by around 60 percent compared to conventional generators. This increase in efficiency in real world operation by seven to eight percentage points makes efficiencies of 80 percent and more a reality.
Implementation of the new technology is very easy. The previous diode is simply replaced with an active rectifying diode (ARD) featuring semi-conductor technology. Accordingly, a generator with ARD has the same dimensions and is subject to the exact same validation. In fact, it can be used not only for new business, but also in ongoing series production.

Wind energy has been used for centuries, to pump water from wells, set sail on the sea, and more recently to create renewable electricity. Wind turbines are large structures, with three blades and a generator that produces electricity as the blades spin. The mechanical structure of the turbine is the three blades attached to a rotor, which has a main shaft that connects to the generator. The generator is located at the top of the wind turbine to gain the most power. This is the process of converting kinetic energy to electricity. In addition to wind turbines with blades there are also vertical-axis structures that are oval shaped. The structure can be as tall as 20 stories with turbine blades that stretch 200 feet.The largest producers of wind energy include Germany, Spain, and The United States.

In keeping with this trend, researchers from the National University of Singapore have developed a device called a shadow-effect energy generator (SEG), which opens the door to new possibilities in sustainable energy generation.
This project, led by Dr.Tan See Chwing, aims to solve this very problem. The shadow effect generator (SEG) harvests electricity by using the contrast between well-illuminated areas and shadows. This low-cost device is easy to manufacture and essentially performs two major functions: it converts illumination contrast into electricity while also acting as a proximity sensor to monitor nearby objects.
The team also conducted a few experiments to study the performance of the SEG both as a generator and as a self-powered sensor. They found that the energy harvested from the SEG device was sufficient to power a wearable device like a watch indoors, in the presence of shadows.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) came into effect on 1 January 2020 and is currently active. It enables small-scale low-carbon electricity generators to receive payments for any surplus energy they export back to the grid.
To be an SEG Generator, you will need to shop around for an SEG Licensee (an electricity supplier authorised to offer an SEG tariff) and apply directly to them. All SEG Licensees are obliged to offer an SEG tariff to all eligible generators. However, each one will have its own specific application process that you will need to follow up on.
